| Foundation Stage |
|
We are operating a Foundation Stage Unit in All Souls Primary School, implementing a programme based on the Foundation Stage Curriculum and working towards the Early Learning Goals. This means we have a free flow, play-based programme that offers a balance between adult-led focussed activities, and child initiated activities. The unit can operate separately as Nursery and Reception classes (for arrival and home time and carpet sessions throughout the day) and as a whole unit for the free flow play sessions during the day. This type of setting supports those children who need free play as well as providing extension for those who require focussed activities.
Outdoor play is very important in the Foundation Stage and we try to ensure children have some outdoor learning and play “whatever the weather”.
Hours for the Foundation Stage differ to the main school slightly. We operate from 9am, to 3:15pm. The early finishing time allows staff to plan thoroughly and as a team for the next day.
Children can attend Nursery from the age of 3 years, however are not guaranteed a place in our Reception class.

| Key Stage One |
The children in Years One and Two follow the National Curriculum for Key Stage One.
This comprises of three core subjects - English, Mathematics, and Science.
Religious Education (RE) is also a core subject and we follow our own programme of study for this subject.
In addition there are 9 foundation subjects - Art, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Information and Communication Technology, Music, Physical Education (PE), Personal, Social, Citizenship and Health Education (PSCHE).
The school has policies and schemes of work to ensure full curriculum coverage of the National Curriculum for Key Stage One.
We try to ensure transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One is as smooth as possible and we have various planned transition events which take place towards the end of Reception and at the beginning of Year One.
Within Key Stage One we provide pupils with a balance between focused activities and independent learning. We have high expectations for each pupil
whilst being sensitive to the different rate that each child learns. We aim throughout Key Stage One to work closely with parents to ensure that their child is given appropriate opportunities and encouragement.
Homework is set once a week in Key
Stage 1 and often consists of a Literacy and a
Numeracy activity. Children will sometimes be asked to work on a topic based project. Parents are encouraged to support their child with homework. Children bring home school books to read and share; these are changed several times a week and comments recorded in home reading diaries. School book bags can be bought from the school office.
The children have a daily assembly
and a morning and afternoon playtime.

|
Children are given fruit to eat during morning play, provided to all children in
Foundation stage and Key
Stage 1, by the
national schools fruit scheme.
Sweets and crisps are not allowed. Children can drink water throughout the day. We encourage them to bring water bottles, clearly labelled, to school each day.
